Weight Loss Weekly

This week Joie de Vivre asked us, "How do your family and friends support you or hinder you in your weight loss efforts? Do they adapt easily to your changing habits and help you along, or do they confront your new habits with skepticism?"

Joie de Vivre: "The place? Applebees. The dessert? Cheesecake shooter...eew. After a bite, I put my fork down not wanting to waste the calories. My friends (well, not so much anymore) look over at me and sneer, "Oh, is this the new thing you're doing now?" Fortunately, the comment makes me think about our friendship rather than my weight loss goals and efforts, but there is always that nagging doubt..." read more at Joie de vivre: An amateur gourmet's guide.

Bernie: "I think the most amazing way in which my friends and family support me is by loving me no matter what. I can be in "crazed diet" mode or in "don't give a stuff" mode and they just accept me for me, and carry on being the best family and friends a girl could ask for." Read more at Yo-yonomore."

Nurit is not doing a WLW post this week because she's participating in a Hunger Challenge. But check out her blog to see what it's all about at family.friendly.food.

Me: My fam has been very supportive in my weight loss efforts, which is great!! Here's a picture of my cute family.

My husband has been really good...like when I first trying to change my eating habits and was cranky and starving, ready to give up and chow down on a whole bag of potato chips. He put up with my crankiness and fixed me healthy snacks to help calm me down. And he's really good about cooking at home. I love to go out to eat, but he reminds me that we'll consume so many more calories eating out and he always takes the initiative to cook a tasty meal at home.

My mom has been great too. She's lost 25 pounds in the past year and has been able to keep it off, so she shares all kinds of tips with me along the way! And whenever we go to my parents house for dinner, she will go out of her way to cook a nice, healthy meal for me with lots of protein and veggies. Aww! My dad's kind of a bad influence though, he tells me that I don't need to lose weight and he's always offering me some kind of chocolate or Coke when I'm at their house. Ha ha! :) My skinny sister is good about noticing when I've lost a few pounds and telling me that I'm looking good, which encourages me to keep going!

So, yes, I'm very fortunate to have a supportive family!! What about you? Do your friends/family support or hinder you in your weight loss efforts?

  2. I think your dad is telling you in his own way that you are beautiful and he loves you no matter your size. Men just have a harder time saying that bluntly though. Next time, just say, "I love you too Dad. But don't you know that Coke is soooo bad for me? Don't you want me to be healthy so I can help take care of you when you're an old coot?" (Or something like that)

  3. P.S. Your mom is awesome! I've heard from several people how hard it is to lose weight after 40. That is part of my impetus to start as I know it will not be a fast process for me now. 25 lbs is awesome! What motivation for you too!

  4. That's so great to have such family love and supprot. i agree with Joie, I also thought it's your dad's way to say he loves you just as you are. What is better than that?!

  5. When weight loss becomes visibly noticeable, you start to get some weird comments. I took it as a cue for another attitude adjustment. One, I decided I was probably taking what they were saying the wrong way, so I opt to always give the benefit of the doubt. If it comes round again, I've decided that comments have more to do with their own issues and insecurities than me. So, I just let it roll off my back.

Husband was great this go 'round of weight loss.

  6. Nothing defines health and fitness in this age, toned bodies and size zero is the requirement of todays generation and because of it many people try just about anything to burn away their excess fat. You can even find medicines such as phentermine, adipex, xenical and Phentremine that claim to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

  7. I am 5' tall and I used to weigh 90-95 lbs until 2005. After having two pregnancies back to back, being at home all day long with kids, working from home and cooking three course dinners every night, mindless eating and not exercising got me to the point where I weigh 130 lbs now! I didn't weigh 130 lbs even when I was 9 months pregnant... This July I will turn 30 and my goal is to loose at least 25-30 lbs by then. Unfortunately, I am surrounded with family and friends (including my husband) that are supposedly like me the way I am. Since everybody knows that I like dark chocolate I constantly get chocolate as a present for Mother's Day, Int'l Women's Day, birthday, wedding anniversary, my kids' birthdays, New Year celebrations...

I don't have a strong will power to resist but then I am not happy that I can't fit in my size 0-2 pants and have to wear size 6-8... I wish I had a supportive family...
